FIRST AID COURSE COMES TO COLLINSTOWN SCHOOL

22 children from 5th and 6th class in St. Mary’s National School today (11th March 2020) successfully completed a 3 hour First Aid Mini Medics Course, brought to the school by Connacht Health & Safety Training Institute (www.chsi.ie).

The children were brought through procedures for administering CPR, using a defibrillator, recovery position, minor first aid, applying a sling and ensuring the area and patient are safe, together with how to call the emergency services.

All 22 children were commended by Aoife & Linda, their tutors and were told they were the best group they had encountered!!  😊

The Parents Association who subsidized the course, making the end cost just €10 to the participant, are delighted to have brought this life saving skill to our village.  In the end with a maximum number of 20 places, 22 spots were booked up overnight such was the appetite for this vital life skill.

CHSI were professional and helpful in their administration and correspondence, their course delivery and management and how they handled the children making every aspect of the course age appropriate.  The Parents Association would like to thank them for travelling all the way from Oranmore to deliver the course here in Collinstown.

In addition, the feedback from the students is very positive and would lead us to want to book this course again each year in the hope that all children in St. Mary’s are First Aid trained before they leave primary school.  Our thanks to the school and Prionsias for being so open to our suggestions and accommodating the course during school hours; Fr. Patrick Donnelly for allowing us to use the Parish Centre for the course and to the kids themselves for participating so fully and giving this very important course their undivided attention.

All of the children were presented with a First Aid Certificate and a first aid booklet and we hope the course will stand to them should they ever need to call on their new found skills!
