Heritage Week Events in Collinstown Thursday 22nd August

Heritage Week takes place between 17th and 25th August.  This is coordinated by the Heritage Council and groups all over the country organise events aimed at building awareness about our heritage.  There are lots of events on in Westmeath for Heritage Week, including two events in Collinstown on Thursday 22nd August.

The Turning Wheel

Collinstown Action Group are delighted to be launching our CreativillAGE project in the form of a social documentary titled ‘The Turning Wheel’.  Quietly, over the past two years, a Creative Collaboration involving Broadcaster/ Writer Manchán Magan, Artist/Film Makers Nicola Lane and Karl Somers and Artist Teresa Doyle has evolved.  They have worked closely with 4 of Collinstown’s most senior and wisest citizens and with the Senior Classes and the teachers of St Mary’s National School.   This is a hugely important project about our social history.

This beautifully made Film tells the story of life and lore from the Collinstown Cummerstown area from over fifty years and more. Beautiful old photographs, film footage, a diary, interviews and the Children’s artistic response are skillfully embedded in this new Heritage document. This project gratefully received grant aid as part of the Creative Ireland Programme 2017- 2022. Collinstown Action Group would like to acknowledge and thank Westmeath County Council Arts Office for their support.

The Turning Wheel will be launched on Thursday August 22nd at 11am in Collinstown Hall (this event is not suitable for Children under twelve).  Come and join us and be among the first to see this wonderful film that captures the past and preserves it for our future.

Field Names Project

The great work done as part of the Westmeath Field Names Project continues in Collinstown Hall at 8pm on Thursday 22nd August.  What can field names can tell us about the past? Dr Aengus Finnegan will explore our field name heritage and an exhibition will feature some of the field names recorded locally.  People will be invited to 'fill in the gaps' on working maps showing field names recorded to date.
